Can I Tint Shellac Primer

B-I-N Shellac-Base Primer may be tinted with up to 2 ounces of universal colorant per gallon. Tinting the primer toward the color of the topcoat helps hide in one coat. Note: The addition of universal colorant may prolong the dry time of this product.

How do you make black shellac?

No problem making a black shellac. You just need the black powder stain that is alcohol soluble. Mix the powder stain with alcohol as directed, then add to shellac as needed.

How do you use shellac before staining?

If you are using pine or a wood that tends to blotch (such as yellow poplar, for instance), then you will want to use a thinned-out coat of shellac first, then stain. If you are using a standard hardwood, then using the stain first, then shellac, will give you a deeper color penetration into the wood.
