How Does a Payphone Work

A payphone (alternative spelling: pay phone) is typically a coin-operated public telephone, often located in a telephone booth or in high-traffic outdoor areas, with prepayment by inserting money (usually coins) or by billing a credit or debit card, or a telephone card.

How did old payphones work?

Unlike current payphones, customers who used the phone would pay after they used it, rather than before. It was essentially an honor system, where, after use, the user would insert coins and the operator could hear if the right amount was used.

How much is a pay phone call?

You could call collect, or person-to-person for your ten cents, or you could keep depositing change to pay for your escalating minutes. Now the cost of using a payphone is 50 cents, but it’s for unlimited minutes.
