Plants, such as air plants or some epiphytic varieties, thrive in volcanic rock. Lava rock houseplants are commonly sold in grocery floral departments and garden centers. They make unique and easy-to-care-for planting situations. Plants in lava rock that work well are Tillandsia, succulents, and some grasses.
Can I use lava rock in potted plants?
Use lava rocks in grain sizes from 2 to 8 mm as an aggregate for the substrate of your balcony and indoor plants. As a rule of thumb, this ratio has proven itself: 4 parts potting soil, 1 part lava rock. Before planting, cover the bottom of the pot and container with a one-inch layer of lava rock.
Is lava good for plants?
Considered by many to be an excellent source of energy for the soil, lava sand makes soil nutrients more available to plant root. It provides aeration and porosity to the soil and helps retain the right amount of moisture in the soil, is durable and resists degradation.
