The sacrum is a shield-shaped bony structure that is located at the base of the lumbar vertebrae and that is connected to the pelvis. The sacrum forms the posterior pelvic wall and strengthens and stabilizes the pelvis.
What movement does the sacrum do?
the sacrum moves up, backward, and rotates to the same side that absorbs the force. This motion is opposed by the posterior sacroiliac ligament that is supported by the multifidus.
Can you walk if you break your sacrum?
A sacral fracture requires an initial period of bed rest during which the patient may commence gentle exercise guided by a physiotherapist. The patient will undergo a transition from non-weight bearing to partial weight bearing until it is advised to stand on full weight.
