Peonies like a good chill in the winter. In order to set their flower buds, peony roots should be planted relatively close to the soil surface—only about 2-to 3-inches deep. It may feel odd to leave roots so exposed, but peonies actually need this chilling to attain dormancy and set buds.
Do peonies have shallow roots?
When weeding your peonies remember that they have shallow roots. If you cultivate more than 2 inches deep you could possibly injure the roots. Since peonies are quite tall and most of them have large flowers, when they’re wet or in windy conditions they tend to flop over.
Do peonies have a large root system?
Peonies should be grown in well-drained, fertile soil with a neutral to slight alkaline pH. Over time, peonies develop a large root system and become difficult to move. When planting, take time to site your peonies in a place where they can grow happily for many years.
