A SID is sometimes called a Departure Procedure (DP). SIDs are unique to the associated airport. A STAR, or Standard Terminal Arrival Route, (‘Standard Instrument Arrival’ in the UK) defines a pathway into an airport from the airway structure.

2.1. 4 Typically, SID and STAR names begin either with the identifier of the NDB or VOR they overfly or with the five letter name of a fix. This is followed by alphanumeric code (e.g. DONAD 1A). Some FMS systems only accept a 5-letter name plus an alphanumeric code.
