Chinese historical records, considered more accurate than contemporary Japanese accounts, confirm the existence of an unmarried queen named Himiko but place her in the early 3rd century ad. According to some sources, she ruled an area referred to as Yamatai, the location of which remains in dispute.

(January 2021) Click [show] for important translation instructions. Himiko (卑弥呼, c. 170–248 AD), also known as Shingi Waō (親魏倭王, “Ruler of Wa, Friend of Wei”), was a shamaness-queen of Yamatai-koku in Wakoku (倭国).
Did Queen Himiko have powers?
Considered by the Chinese as the ruler of all of Japan or Wa, given her state’s power, she exchanged diplomatic embassies with the ruling Wei dynasty. A semi-legendary figure, Himiko is curiously absent from Japanese historical records but does appear briefly in Chinese histories.
