Window panes are the sheets of glass inside the window frame. They may be single-pane thickness, double-pane, or energy efficient. They can be plain glass or ornate. They may come in a single large sheet, or there may be varying shapes and sizes of panes set within the frame.
Why do they call it a window pane?
It comes from Old Norse and first turns up in English circa. The Norse word was “vindauga,” from vindr “the wind” and auga “eye.” Old English words for it were eagþyrl, literally “eye-hole,” and eagduru, literally “eye-door.” The “window” is the hole, not the glass.
What is window pane made of?
While we traditionally think of glass as a fragile material that’s easily broken, glass offers many benefits when it’s used properly. Sure, some window panes are made of plastic, but glass remains the best solution for window panes due to its durability and aesthetic appeal.
