The Kalinga people are an indigenous ethnic group whose ancestral domain is in the Cordillera Mountain Range of the northern Philippines. They are mainly found in Kalinga province which has an area of 3,282.58 sq. km. Some of them, however, already migrated to Mountain Province, Apayao, Cagayan, and Abra.
What are Kalinga tribe known for?
The Kalinga have rich cultural traditions and expressions of music, dance and artisan work. They continue to enforce the “bodong” or peace pacts within the sub-tribes to resolve tribal conflicts. Scholars and enthusiasts worldwide now flock to the province to learn the ancient method of “batok” or hand-tapped tattoo.
Is Kalinga and Igorot the same?
Igorot is the mainstream, collective name of several of the tribes in the Cordilleras (the political name of the area is the Cordilleras Administrative Region or CAR). The provinces that make up CAR are Abra, Apayao, Benguet, Kalinga, Ifugao, and Mountain Province.
