Is cyclamate banned in the UK?
Cyclamate was banned by the UK in the late sixties after being linked to cancer, before being re-evaluated and reinstated in 1996. Ten years later the European Food Safety Authority ordered urgent tests after paper linked aspartame to increased rates of leukaemia and lymphomas.
Why is cyclamate allowed in Europe?
This is because the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has long suspected that the substance might be toxic and could even be carcinogenic. The European Acceptable Daily Intake (ADI) standard provides for a maximum of 7 milligrammes of cyclamate per day per kilogramme of body weight for children up to the age of eight.
