Celiac disease is an autoimmune disorder that’s triggered when you eat gluten. It’s also known as celiac sprue, nontropical sprue, or gluten-sensitive enteropathy. Gluten is a protein in wheat, barley, rye, and other grains.
Can celiac go away?
Celiac disease has no cure but can be managed by avoiding all sources of gluten. Once gluten is eliminated from your diet, your small intestine can begin to heal.
Can celiac cause liver damage?
Celiac patients have both a 2-fold to 6-fold increased risk of later liver disease and 8-fold increased risk of death from liver cirrhosis than the general population. Thus, it is possible that a proportion of patients with advanced “cryptogenic” cirrhosis have in fact a chronic liver damage due to unrecognized CD.
