What Is a Fish Mint

What Is a Fish Mint

Fish Mint is a herbaceous hardy perennial plant that can grow to 3ft in height and 3ft into circumfrence. Though not an actual mint, the herb is given this name because it roots easily like mint and has a strong fish aroma in the leaves. It is often used in Vietnamese Cuisine and with grilled meats.

Why is it called fish mint?

It is commonly grown as a leaf vegetable, and is used as a fresh herbal garnish. The leaf has an unusual taste that is often described as ‘fishy’ (earning it the nickname “fish mint”), so it is not enjoyed as universally as basil, mint, or other more commonly used herbs.

What does fish mint taste like?

While fish mint leaves have a distinctive fishy flavor, the roots are much more akin to a really strong cilantro. They are a bit astringent, and their flavor is dominated by the aromatic “soapy” quality that many people dislike in cilantro.
