Rat guards are used around the hawsers of ships to prevent rats and other rodents on shore from boarding the ships by simply walking along the hawsers. Heretofore, rat guards have generally comprised large circular discs which have had to be installed on the ships hawsers by hand under inconvenient circumstances.
How do you make a rat guard for a tree?
Rat guards on the trunks will keep the rats out of trees (Figure 4). Rat guards can be as simple as a piece of sheet metal 18–24 inches wide and as long as the circumference of the tree plus two inches. Use a piece of wire bent like a giant staple to secure the ends of the sheet metal without penetrating the tree.
How do you stop rats climbing?
You can paint a 12″ band around the pipe at least 3 feet from the ground using high gloss clear paint to stop rodents from climbing. As an alternative you can place circular metal rodent guards around the pipe. Brick or stone houses can be very easy for rats to climb.
