Standard glass (most commonly soda lime glass, which is used for both windows and picture frame glazing) actually provides some UV protection, absorbing about 97% of UVB rays; however, UVA rays, which also cause damage, can still penetrate the glass.
Is UV protection glass worth it?
Yes, ultraviolet (UV) eye protection matters. UV radiation from the sun can damage not only the skin of your eyelid but also the cornea, lens and other parts of the eye. UV exposure also contributes to the development of certain types of cataracts, growths on the eye and possibly macular degeneration.
Do I need UV glass for picture frames?
UV light can harm your frame, so we definitely recommend getting a cover with some degree of UV protection. Clear finish is best if you don’t mind glare, intend to place your frame in a place where glare wouldn’t be an issue, or have vibrant colors in your art.
