Where Does Schistosity Come from?

schistosity, mode of foliation that occurs in certain metamorphic rocks as a consequence of the parallel alignment of platy and lath-shaped mineral constituents. It reflects a considerable intensity of metamorphism—i.e., changes resulting from high temperatures, pressures, and deformation.

Where is schist found?

Schist can be found in many countries including Brazil, parts of the US and Ireland. Schist has been previously used to make decorative rock walls.

Is Schistosity formed by heat?

Formation. Schistosity is developed at elevated temperature when the rock is more strongly compressed in one direction than in other directions (nonhydrostatic stress). Nonhydrostatic stress is characteristic of regional metamorphism where mountain building is taking place (an orogenic belt).
