Why Is Water Bad?

Drinking too much water can be unhealthy and even lead to death in extreme cases. When you drink more water than your kidneys can handle, you can upset the balance of sodium levels in your blood. This is called water intoxication and in extreme cases, it can cause brain damage, comas, and even death.

Contaminated water can harbor bacteria, such as those responsible for diarrhea, cholera, dysentery, typhoid, hepatitis A, and polio. According to the UN, every year, approximately 297,000 children under five die from diseases linked to poor sanitation, poor hygiene, or unsafe drinking water.

Why is it bad to drink water?

When you drink too much water, your kidneys can't get rid of the excess water. The sodium content of your blood becomes diluted. This is called hyponatremia and it can be life-threatening.
