In so many ways, rhetoric plays an important role in our lives. The study of rhetoric provides the tools we need not only to analyze ideas presented to us, but also offers the tools we may use to defend our own ideas, whether we are leading a group or having a discussion with friends.
What is the purpose of rhetoric?
Rhetoric (/ˈrɛtərɪk/) is the art of persuasion, which along with grammar and logic (or dialectic – see Martianus Capella), is one of the three ancient arts of discourse. Rhetoric aims to study the techniques writers or speakers utilize to inform, persuade, or motivate particular audiences in specific situations.
What is rhetoric and why is it important that we study it?
Rhetoric is the art of persuasion in writing or speaking. Rhetoric is important because, for our writing or speaking to be effective, it must be persuasive.
