Natural hematite is sometimes weakly magnetic, but won't attract metals or other pieces of hematite. Hemalyke, hematin and similar synthetic stones do not usually contain any real hematite, but can be polished to resemble natural hematite and have a strong magnetic field.
How can you tell real hematite?
The Hematite should be a bit red below the surface or the powdered Hematite should be reddish in a real gemstone. The same idea works with a streak test. Scrape a piece of Hematite across some unglazed porcelain or some black sandpaper and it should leave a red or brown streak.
Is Magnetic Hematite the same as hematite?
Magnetic hematite is not a true hematite in terms of its mineral content. Actually a man-made magnetic material, the content of magnetic hematite varies between manufacturers.
