The bonnethead shark is found in tropical and subtropical waters on both coasts of North America, from North Carolina to southern Brazil—including the Caribbean and the Gulf of Mexico—and from Southern California to Ecuador. It lives in estuaries and shallow bays with mud or sand bottoms and in coral reefs.
What ocean does the bonnethead shark live in?
In the winter, the bonnethead shark is found closer to the equator, where the water is warmer. While it is still abundant in the North Atlantic Ocean and Gulf of Mexico, it has become significantly less common in the Caribbean Sea, and has been nearly extirpated from most of its South Atlantic and Pacific range.
Do bonnethead sharks bite humans?
Relation to Humans
They are neither aggressive or dangerous to humans, nor do they bite. Owing to their size and shy nature, the bonnethead sharks are considered practically harmless to humans, with only one recorded unprovoked attack attributed to this shark species.
