Executions and sentences in 2020
Four countries – Iran (at least 246), Egypt (at least 107), Iraq (at least 45) and Saudi Arabia (27) – accounted for 88 percent of all known executions in 2020.
What countries still use execution?
A public execution is when the public - sometimes family and friends of the person convicted - are allowed to watch them be put to death. The countries where these still occur are North Korea, Saudi Arabia, Iran, and Somalia according to research carried out by Amnesty International in 2012.
How many countries have a death penalty?
Amnesty International recorded that 1,477 death sentences were imposed in 54 countries, down 36% from at least 2,307 in 2019.
