The symptoms of optic neuritis tend to come in flares, getting worse for a short time before beginning to get better. Symptoms may also flare up in response to hot or cold temperatures. In most cases, symptoms will go away on their own with no specific treatment.
What causes optic neuritis to flare up?
Optic neuritis (ON) is when your optic nerve becomes inflamed. ON can flare up suddenly from an infection or nerve disease. The inflammation usually causes temporary vision loss that typically happens in only one eye. Those with ON sometimes experience pain.
How long can optic neuritis last?
In many cases, optic neuritis is short-lived and resolves by itself without treatment in around four to 12 weeks. The person's vision improves once the inflammation subsides.
