Allodynia is an unusual symptom that can result from several nerve-related conditions. When you're experiencing it, you feel pain from stimuli that don't normally cause pain. For example, lightly touching your skin or brushing your hair might feel painful.
What does it mean when it hurts to be touched?
Allodynia is a type of pain. People with allodynia are extremely sensitive to touch. Activities that aren't usually painful (like combing one's hair) can cause severe pain. Many conditions and injuries cause allodynia.
What causes hypersensitivity to touch?
People who are experiencing skin rashes or shingles may also have tactile sensitivity. This is usually caused by a viral infection and will resolve in a few days on its own. When the nerves are partially or completely impaired, this can also cause increased sensory stimulation.
