Does Plating Gold Tarnish?

Plating is a process where a layer of gold is placed on to coat the surface of another metal. As the jewelry is not 100% solid gold, extra care should be taken to maximize its lifespan. Anything plated will eventually tarnish with time and wear.

How long does gold plated jewelry last?

On average, gold plated jewelry can last about two years before the gold plating begins to tarnish and wear down. However, the length of time can be much shorter or longer depending on whether or not you decide to properly maintain your jewelry collection.

What gold plating does not tarnish?

The thickness of the gold alloy layer also affects the piece's chance of tarnishing. Gold-filled pieces can still tarnish, but it takes special circumstances for that to happen. Pure gold doesn't tarnish, so even though it's an alloy, the thick layer on gold-filled pieces prevents tarnishing.
