Finders, keepers, sometimes extended as the children's rhyme finders, keepers; losers, weepers, is an English adage with the premise that when something is unowned or abandoned, whoever finds it first can claim it for themselves permanently.
Are Finders Keepers legal?
For example, in New York, it is $20, while in California it is $100. Typically, the laws will honor finder's keepers. If after turning in cash or lost property to the police and the true owner cannot be found, after a period of time, the finder may become the keeper.
Can you keep someone's property that you find?
Anyone who found lost personal property may keep the property, until and unless the original owner comes forward. This applies whether the lost property was discovered in a public area, or whether it was discovered in the property of the individual who found it.
