Purple and red make magenta, which is a monotone cousin to purple. The hallmark of interior design is the use of contrasting colors or monotone colors to create an interesting space.
What happens when you mix red and purple?
When you mix red and violet together, you technically get the color called red-violet. The more red you add the redder it will get, and the more violet you add the more violet it will get. See color wheel on the right to better see the relationship between different colors and how red and violet makes red-violet.
What does red violet make?
Both its saturation and brightness falling short of 100%, red-violet is not a pure chroma. There is a color of similar hue that, however, comes close to being a pure chroma: process magenta. The pure chroma color composed of equal parts of magenta and red is called rose.
