Background. Magnetic resonance cholangiopancreatography (MRCP) is an alternative to diagnostic endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) for investigating biliary obstruction. The use of MRCP, a non-invasive procedure, may prevent the use of unnecessary invasive procedures.

Is MRCP as good as ERCP?

MRCP is considered comparable to ERCP procedure as they are both common and useful imaging modalities of the biliary tree.

Is ERCP more accurate than MRCP?

MRCP was successful in 44/45 patients (98%), while ERCP failed in three patients (93% success rate). The MRCP diagnosis was correct in all but one patient (98%). Overall diagnostic accuracy was 92%. 13/41 (32%) patients had a normal ERCP.
