Viscous lung secretions in patients with COPD consist of mucus-derived glycoproteins and leukocyte-derived DNA. The oral agent N -acetylcysteine has antioxidant and mucokinetic properties and is used to treat patients with COPD.
What is meant by bronchial secretion?
Bronchial secretions are mainly produced by goblet cells and submucosal glands but also small amounts of surfactant from clara cells and some other fluids are part of the airway epithelium fluid.
What causes excessive mucus secretions?
Respiratory infections like colds, the flu, and sinusitis are common causes of increased mucus production and coughing up mucus. Allergic reactions are another reason that mucus production can increase. Even consumption of spicy foods can spark excess mucus production in the nasal passages.
