Chicks will not initially need any grit until you start feeding them things other than crumbles. Once you start giving them treats or clumps of grass or dandelions they will need the grit. Up until 8 weeks or so, they will need 'chick grit' which is much finer.
Do you need grit for baby chicks?
Chick starter is typically milled finely enough so that baby chicks don't usually need grit unless they're eating something other than starter. But they will need grit once they begin eating treats and other foods, or foraging in the yard.
How much grit do baby chicks need?
A chicken requires 30 to 50 grams of stones or insoluble grit every year. There is a tendency for chickens to eat more grit than is essential for grinding their food. In another study it was found that has found that surplus grit passed off from the gizzard in the first 14 days after it was withheld.
