Should I Deadhead Gentian?

Should I Deadhead Gentian?

The gentians are kept well watered throughout the season but have good drainage. My Gentiana acaulis will bloom a second time if I deadhead the flowers about two weeks after they fade. I don't deadhead them all but leave one so that it can form seed that I scratch back into the ground. Also, they need sun.

How do you prune gentian?

Gentiana in winter

In fall, you may cut the stems and withered leaves back short. Protecting the foot of the plant with a nice layer of dried leaves will allow your gentiana to overwinter without any issues and it will bloom back in the following spring.

How do you look after gentian plants?

Gentian likes the spot with full sun to partial shade. The plant does have special requirements with regard to the soil. Moisture-retaining, somewhat poor soil is important, since that's what the plant has in the mountains where it grows. Many species also require somewhat chalky and well-draining soil.
