What Is a Battered Sav?

Although rarely heard of these days, the 'battered sav' — a saveloy sausage, coated in a yeasted batter and deep-fried — used to feature on every fish and chip shop menu in town, a tradition passed down from our British cousins.

Why is it called a battered sav?

From a shortened form of saveloy sausage. When used to refer to a gymnastics move or similar, the term was first coined by Roy Slaven and H.G. Nelson on "The Dream" in their commentary on the 2000 Olympics Men's Gymnastics (because the gymnast "batters his sav").

What's the difference between a Pluto Pup and battered sav?

Apart from the Pluto pup having a stick to hold, the batter used is different - the Pluto pup batter is a sweet batter and puffs up when deep fried wheras the batter on a battered sav stays flat and may even have crispy edges - the Pluto pup has a franfurt inside and not a saveloy like the battered sav.
