When Does Ordinal Scale Take Place?

Ordinal Scale, we should specify, is set in 2026, four years after the start of the original Sword Art Online, and chronologically after the end of Sword Art Online II. However, the film has extensive call-backs to the franchise's first arc, the “Aincrad” storyline.

Where does Ordinal Scale take place in the timeline?

Back in the main timeline, the Ordinal Scale film takes place a few weeks after the end of the "Mother's Rosario" Arc. It also has the distinction of being an anime-exclusive story, not appearing in author Kawahara's light novels.

Does Ordinal Scale take place after Season 2?

The film takes place after the anime series' second season, Sword Art Online II. It was then revealed at the Dengeki Bunko Haru no Saiten 2016 event on March 13, 2016 that the film is titled Sword Art Online The Movie: Ordinal Scale.
