Though it waddles and stands the size of a quail, the Corn Crake is more closely related to rails, gallinules, and coots. It breeds on grassland and farmland from northern Europe south to Turkey and east to the edge of China.

The corncrake, also referred to as landrail, is an extremely secretive bird hiding and nesting in long grassland around the outskirts of Northern and Western Scotland. Corncrakes have a round body with a long neck and are surprisingly small (only a little bigger than a blackbird).

Now the corncrake is virtually extinct in Northern Ireland and restricted to a few stronghold areas in the Republic of Ireland. The dramatic decline of this species has been recorded across western Europe, and is inextricably linked to changes in agricultural practices which occurred during the twentieth century.
