Based on Caton's discovery and of those of Beck, Danilevsky, Prawdicz-Neminsky and others, Berger made the first EEG (electrocorticogram) recording on July 6, 1924, during a neurosurgical operation on a 17-year-old boy, performed by the neurosurgeon Nikolai Guleke.
How long has EEG been around?
The first clinical EEG laboratories were established in the United States in the 1930s and 40s. In 1947, the American EEG Society, later the American Clinical Neurophysiology Society, was founded.
When did EEG become popular?
In the 1950s, William Grey Walter developed an adjunct to EEG called EEG topography, which allowed for the mapping of electrical activity across the surface of the brain. This enjoyed a brief period of popularity in the 1980s and seemed especially promising for psychiatry.
