In 1722 Esfahan was invaded by Afghans who murdered Shah Sultan Hossein, and in turn the Ottomans and the Russians began seizing territories in Iran and the Safavid Empire came to a complete end in 1736.

After the reign of Shah Abbas the Safavid Empire was never as strong. The empire was affected by internal problems as well as external threats. One of the external threats, the Afghans, eventually captured the capital, Isfahan and overthrew the Safavids.

Ismāʿīl rushed from his campaigns in Central Asia to oppose the threat to his capital at Tabrīz. In a hard-fought battle at Chāldirān, Safavid forces were defeated by the Ottomans, whose forces greatly outnumbered them. Ismāʿīl was wounded and nearly captured as he tried to rally troops.
