Tdap is a vaccine that protects against three different bacteria: tetanus, diphtheria, and pertussis (whooping cough). It is given as a booster shot to kids, usually at age 11 or 12. Tetanus, diphtheria, and pertussis are very dangerous, life-threatening diseases.
Why do you need a Tdap shot?
The Tdap vaccine is a combination vaccine. It protects preteens and adults against three diseases: tetanus, diphtheria, and pertussis (whooping cough). Tetanus and diphtheria are rare in the United States today, but whooping cough continues to spread.
How long is a Tdap vaccine good for?
ALL adults who did not get Tdap vaccine as an adolescent should get one dose of this vaccine. Once they have had this dose, a Td or Tdap booster shot should be given every 10 years.
