Debarking, or devocalization, is an invasive surgical procedure that involves removing a large amount of laryngeal tissue. It involves a great deal of postoperative pain. Because this procedure is unnecessary and inherently cruel, many veterinarians condemn it and refuse to perform it.
Is debarking painful?
This technique is invasive, painful, requires several minutes of surgical time, and has a prolonged recovery time, during which time sedatives are required to keep the dog calm and quiet. Excessive scarring can result from this technique and cause permanent breathing difficulties.
Is debarking a dog painful?
No, debarking a dog isn't completely painful because of the anesthesia. However, as the anesthesia wears off, it's possible for a dog to feel some form of discomfort. A vet can provide painkillers or sedatives in such cases.
