Colchicine works by decreasing swelling and lessening the build up of uric acid crystals that cause pain in the affected joint(s). This medication is also used to prevent attacks of pain in the abdomen, chest, or joints caused by a certain inherited disease (familial Mediterranean fever).
Does colchicine remove uric acid?
Low doses of colchicine can be taken every day to reduce the tendency for attacks. However, this will not get rid of crystals or prevent long-term joint damage because colchicine does not reduce the levels of uric acid in the blood.
What medication lowers uric acid in the body?
The drug allopurinol is the most commonly used uric-acid-lowering medication. It restricts the breakdown of purines and so reduces uric acid levels. The medication is taken after a meal with plenty of fluids.
