How Does Holiday Accruement Work?

How Does Holiday Accruement Work?

Accruing means “building up”. When employees accrue vacation (holiday), it means that their holiday entitlement builds up in proportion to the amount of time they've been employed. The accrual system works out how much holiday an employee can take if they work for an employer for part of the holiday year.

How do holiday accruals work?

Some employers run an 'accrual' system, where holiday entitlement is built up over the first year of employment. This means that for every month you work, you become entitled to one twelfth of your annual entitlement. So, after six months, you would be entitled to a half of your annual entitlement.

What is the rule for holiday pay?

As in most other states across the country, California employers do not have to pay their employees any extra money just because they work on official holidays. If an employee works on a holiday, they will be paid their usual rate of pay.
