Gunnery Sergeant is the seventh enlisted rank in the United States Marine Corps, above staff sergeant and below master sergeant and first sergeant, and is a senior staff non-commissioned officer. It has a pay grade of E-7.

What is the job of a gunnery sergeant?

Gunnery Sergeants usually lead at the Company level, advising Captains on material and personnel readiness. They may serve on Battalion-level staffs, or may be in charge of training units or recruiting stations in the absence of an Officer to fill the billet.

Is Gunnery Sergeant a high rank?

Master Gunnery Sergeant (MGySgt/E-9)

This is the ninth and highest Enlisted rank. They hold the same rank as a Sergeant Major but the job tasks differ. As the name suggests, MGySgts are highly qualified in their occupational MOS, and advise higher-ranking officers on equipment and programs at a Battalion level.
