You should not take photos at a protest for likes, follows, or social media clout. Do not do attend a protest just to say you were there. Protests aren't photoshoots, and the people in the streets venting their anger and frustration at systemic injustices aren't there to pose for your Insta.
Is it okay to photograph protests?
No matter who you are you have the First Amendment right to:
Peacefully assemble and protest in public spaces and photograph and videotape the police or anything else in a public space.
What are the risks of being a photographer?
Photographers are exposed to chemical, physical, and psychological hazards during the course of their work. Photojournalists are at physical risk from motor vehicle crashes and work in war zones. Ergonomic risk comes from handling heavy equipment as well as work in awkward postures in dangerous positions.
