The HPV test checks cells for infection with high-risk HPV types. The Pap test (also called a Pap smear or cervical cytology) collects cervical cells and looks at them for changes caused by HPV that may—if left untreated—turn into cervical cancer. It can also detect cervical cancer cells.
Do all smear tests test for HPV?
No, this is not an option. HPV primary screening means your sample will only be tested for cell changes if you have high-risk HPV. The only way to have your sample checked for cell changes is to book cervical screening privately, for a cost.
Can you see HPV during Pap smear?
An HPV test can give your doctor more information about the cells from your cervix. For example, if the Pap test shows abnormal cervical cells, the HPV test can show whether you have a type of HPV that causes cervical cancer.
