In 2000, a team of geologists discovered a cave filled with giant gypsum crystals in an abandoned silver mine near Almería, Spain. The cavity, which measured 8 by 1.8 by 1.7 metres (26.2 ft × 5.9 ft × 5.6 ft), at the time, being the largest crystal cave ever found.
When was the first geode discovered?
The Crystal Cave In Ohio
It measures a staggering 30 feet (10 meters) long but was larger when it was first discovered. In 1887, a German immigrant Gustav Heineman found this gigantic geode at a depth of 30 feet while digging a well beneath his winery.
When were geodes formed?
First, geodes can form in igneous rock. When lava or magma cools and a bubble of carbon dioxide or water vapor flows in, an empty space is left behind. Lava can also solidify underwater, and any water inside will crack the rock and leak out, leaving a cavity. Geodes can also form in sedimentary rock.
