How did kilmichael MS get its name?
After not being able to agree on a new name, the community leaders listened to a suggestion offered by Duncan McKinley, a Scottish traveling salesman. He said there was a town in Scotland named Kilmichael and to the best of his knowledge there was not another anywhere else. They decided to name the town Kilmichael.
What happened at Kilmichael?
Thirty-six local IRA volunteers commanded by Tom Barry killed sixteen members of the Royal Irish Constabulary's Auxiliary Division. The Kilmichael ambush was politically as well as militarily significant. It occurred one week after Bloody Sunday, and marked an escalation in the IRA's campaign.
