Pentosans are known to be present in the cell walls of all green plants, in the bark and woody fiber of trees, in spices, fungi, mosses, various straws, tree and vegetable gums, fruits, and seeds.
What is the source of pentosan?
Pentosan is any polysaccharide composed of five carbon sugars called pentoses. They are found in grains, fruits, and legumes.
What is wood pentosan?
Wood contains a certain amount of noncellulosic carbohydrates called hemicelluloses. Pentosan content in softwoods is about 7 to 10%, and in hardwoods about 19 to 25%. Pentosan content in pulp indicates the retention or loss of hemicelluloses in general during pulping and bleaching processes.
