What researchers do know is that mating happens twice each year, usually in early spring and late summer. Gestation lasts about 40 days then mother flying squirrels give birth to two to three babies, on average.

How long do squirrels gestate for?

Squirrel birthing and mating season occur twice a year. Squirrel mating season happens once between December and February, then again in late June through August. With the gestation period lasting 38 to 46 days, female squirrels will give birth in early spring (February through April) or late summer (August/September).

Why are the squirrels going crazy?

KISSIMMEE - If you have been wondering why some squirrels seem to be behaving strangely of late, you are not alone, according to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission. The squirrels in question are most likely suffering from itchiness and skin irritation caused by a parasite known as the bot fly.
