The goal of reversi is simple. To win, you need to have more pieces on the board than your opponent by the end of the game. Like checkers or chess, game pieces are either black or white. When the game ends, each player counts their pieces left on the board to determine the winner.

Are Othello and Reversi the same?

Here's the long answer: Othello and Reversi are not actually the same game, but Othello has been called Reversi so often that people often think they are the same game (and some game sites, etc., take advantage of that confusion to rip off Othello by calling it "Reversi", which only perpetuates the confusion).

Why is Othello called renegade?

The name was selected by Hasegawa as a reference to the Shakespearean play Othello, the Moor of Venice, referring to the conflict between the Moor Othello and Iago, and more controversially, to the unfolding drama between Othello, who is black, and Desdemona, who is white.
