It breeds in Alaska and Canada and winters to Baja California, Mexico (AOU 1998). The difficulty in separating these two taxa has affected the status of loons in Hawaii (Pyle 1988), only one Pacific Loon being identified to species in the Southeastern Hawaiian Islands.
What states have loons?
Loons return to northern forested lakes and rivers in the springtime, usually in April or early May. The breeding range includes Alaska and much of Canada south to portions of Washington, Idaho, Montana, North Dakota, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan, New York, Vermont, New Hampshire, and Maine.
Why are there no birds in Hawaii?
Since the early 1800s, the exotic Plasmodium and its tropical mosquito vector (Culex quinquefasciatus) have contributed to the extinction of at least a dozen endemic Hawaiian birds and have all but eliminated the remaining species from the warm lowlands.
