Which Way Should Your Divots Point?

A divot should occur slightly forward of where the ball is resting on the ground. The divot should start under the forward side of the ball. The deepest point of the divot should be 3 inches forward of where the ball contacts the ground. This is the low point of the arc of the swing.

How do you read a divot?

The direction of your divot is the line running back to front and its relation to your intended target line. Ideally, the divot direction should align with the target line. The most common error I see for right-handed golfers is a divot that runs from right to left of the intended line.

Why do my divots point left of my target?

If your divot is right or left of the target, you have another swing path issue to address. If it's going left, you are swinging across the ball and have a descending blow. The result is usually a pull, fade or slice. If it's going right, you are pushing it because of an inside to outside path.
