Florigen (or flowering hormone) is the hypothesized hormone-like molecule responsible for controlling and/or triggering flowering in plants. Florigen is produced in the leaves, and acts in the shoot apical meristem of buds and growing tips. It is known to be graft-transmissible, and even functions between species.
What do you mean by florigen?
: a hormone or hormonal agent that promotes flowering.
How does florigen movement occur?
Florigen moves in the phloem along with photoassimilates (e.g., King and Zeevaart, 1973). ... Movement of RNAs and proteins in the phloem is now well established (Lucas et al., 2001). FT mRNA is produced in the companion cells and then has to move through the sieve elements to the shoot apex to induce flowering.
