Honey bee workers can sting other insects repeatedly. However, barbs in their stingers get caught in the skin of the animals they sting, especially mammals with thick skin such as humans. Removing the stinger is fatal to the bee, so it dies afterward.
Why do worker bees die after stinging?
Summary: When a honeybee stings a mammal, its barbed stinger lodges in the skin, and the honeybee cannot remove it. Instead, it leaves the double lancet behind, along with part of its digestive tract, muscles and nerves. This abdominal rupture is what kills the bee.
Are worker bees the only ones that can sting?
The female bees (worker bees and queens) are the only ones that can sting, and their stinger is a modified ovipositor.
